From global crises to personal challenges, we often find ourselves in a storm of unpredictability. Many of us feel the weight of it, whether directly or indirectly, and it can be overwhelming. Accepting That Uncertainty Is Part of Life
When we first experienced the COVID-19 pandemic, it was a stark reminder of how quickly life can change.
Back then, we often heard the phrase "unprecedented times," and we held onto the hope that once things settled, everything would feel normal again. Yet, if we’re honest, it seems like uncertainty has become a regular part of life.
It’s tempting to believe that if we could just resolve a specific issue, we would finally feel peaceful and grounded. But waiting for things to change externally can set us up for endless disappointment.
The key isn’t in trying to control everything around us but in learning to anchor ourselves within.
Reframing the Concept of Certainty
Certainty isn’t about knowing what will happen tomorrow; it’s about feeling rooted, even when you don’t. In fact, the root of the word "certainty" is "to be settled." And being settled doesn’t mean having every answer; it means having a place of peace within, a foundation you can return to regardless of what’s happening around you.
So, instead of chasing external certainty, we need to shift our focus to cultivating internal peace, allowing ourselves to feel “settled” in the present moment, as it is.
The Trap of the “If Only” Mindset
One of the biggest blocks to peace in uncertain times is the "if only" mindset. You might recognize it as thoughts like:
"If only I knew the outcome of this situation, I could relax."
"If only I had done things differently, I wouldn’t feel so stressed."
"If only things were easier, I could finally feel at peace."
Does this sound familiar? The "if only" mindset tricks us into believing that once a particular problem is solved, peace will magically arrive. But life doesn’t work that way. When one issue resolves, another often appears, leaving us perpetually chasing peace rather than creating it from within.
The truth is, we have the power to find peace now, even amidst life’s uncertainties.
Two Practices for Finding Peace Amid Uncertainty
When you catch yourself in the “if only” loop, here are two mindfulness-based practices that can help you feel more anchored and at ease.
1. Mindful Thinking: Embracing “This Can Be Here Too”
One powerful approach is to reframe your experience with the mantra, “This can be here too.” For example:
“This worry can be here too.”
“This frustration can be here too.”
“This uncertainty can be here too.”
This mantra can create a sense of acceptance, reminding us that it’s possible to hold both the difficult and the beautiful. Life is a mix of light and shadow; embracing that both can exist at the same time allows us to feel more settled, even in discomfort.
2. Mindful Action: Taking Gentle, Intentional Steps
If you’re someone who finds comfort in action, consider “mindful action” as a way to create a sense of agency. When the “if only” mindset arises, try these steps:
Identify a small, meaningful action related to your concern.
Commit to the action, knowing it’s not about control but about engagement with the present.
Focus on what is within reach, like connecting with loved ones, taking a few deep breaths, or organizing a small part of your space.
Mindful action can ground us in what we can influence and reminds us that we’re not entirely powerless.
Anchoring Peace Within
As you experiment with these practices, you may begin to feel a sense of rootedness within yourself. Finding peace isn’t about ignoring the challenges around us; it’s about recognizing that peace and uncertainty can coexist. The anchor you’re seeking isn’t outside of you; it’s you.
Remember: the only constant in life is change, but by cultivating a sense of inner peace, we can navigate those changes with more grace and resilience.
For a deeper practice, consider ending with a short meditation. Take a few minutes each day to connect with your breath, ground yourself in the present, and remind yourself that you are your own anchor.
